We know that increased prices and increased demand lead to an increase in the cost of electricity. The cost of electricity is one of the major operating costs for many commercial and industrial consumers and reducing and keeping a tight control on electricity costs is increasingly becoming a key performance indicator. How can we control or reduce something that cannot be measured? Thus, to control and experience the continuous improvement one must start measuring it.
Zenatix, co-founded by alumni from IIT Delhi, IIM Ahmedabad, and UCLA, provides an energy analytics product that helps managers save at least 10% energy using the intelligence that is derived from the correlated energy data with other factors, including temperature, humidity, and occupancy. With a very simple “pay-as-you-go” model that involves no upfront investment, Zenatix creates an obvious go-to option if you are bothered by your increasing electricity bill.
Rahul Bhalla, an avid reader, who holds a Bachelors of Technology from IIT Delhi is a Co-Founder & Head of Sales at Zenatix and responsible for building and developing client relationships. Prior to co-founding Zenatix, he was the Vice President of Intellectual Property at UnitedLex, where he was responsible for building and farming large scale strategic relationships with Fortune Global 500 and Am Law 200 clients. Prior to joining UnitedLex, Rahul was responsible for implementing Microsoft’s IP outsourcing strategy at CPA Global, where he scaled Microsoft’s initial IP offshore operations from zero to more than 50 IP professionals in a span of 18 months.
As a Co-Founder & Head of Operations, Vishal Bansal is responsible for leading and managing the delivery operations at Zenatix. Prior to co-founding Zenatix, he was working as a Portfolio Manager with the regional office of ING Insurance Asia/Pacific in Hong Kong. He has extensive international experience and has worked in multiple countries including Hong Kong, Australia, Netherlands, and India. He is an expert in financial analytics and has developed statistical models for construction and optimization of equity portfolios. He is a CFA charter holder, holds an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad and a Bachelors of Technology from IIT Delhi.
Dr. Amarjeet Singh, Co-Founder & Head of Technology, is responsible for technology strategy and implementation at Zenatix. He has co-founded Zenatix and is currently on teaching leave from IIIT Delhi, where he is working as Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department. He has led and managed several ongoing collaborations with field partners in the Energy and Healthcare domains. Specifically in the energy domain, he has led multiple sensing deployments on IIIT-Delhi campus towards building a sustainable and smart campus. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. from University of California, Los Angeles, and a Bachelors of Technology from IIT Delhi.
In December 2015, Zenatix raised an undisclosed amount in follow-on funding from Blume Ventures, in a pre-Series-A round. The company has not disclosed the amount but said it will be using the funds for expanding into markets beyond Delhi-NCR and for building up the team. The funding will also be used to improve its technology and the product.
“The product is about helping customers save on their energy spends. With this round, we are aiming to make it more robust, cleaner, and user-friendly,” says Dr. Amarjeet Singh, CTO, Zenatix Technologies.
Investors believe that energy efficiency and savings are as important as solving the energy conservation. And it is Zenatix team’s passion and determination towards energy conservation that attracts more funds.
Product and its workability (How it works)
The product is a combination of hardware and software. The hardware includes energy meters, temperature/humidity sensors and Zenatix controller that pulls data every 30 seconds from these meters and sensors and pushes it to a cloud server. Zenatix can also pull the data from the meters/sensors and an operational BMS if the same infrastructure is already installed by the customers. Based on the collected data, the Zenatix’ software that runs advanced analytics provides easy-to-understand dashboards that help managers understand the energy consumption at various levels in real time. Moreover, it generates alerts, in the form of SMS and email, whenever there are deviations from the optimum operations. It also recommends energy saving measures along with benchmarks for consumptions as per the consumers’ capacity.
The product is also capable of automatically controlling (on/off) electrical loads based on the intelligence delivered by the software. Many uses of the product include – alerts when the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) or other loads shouldn’t be operating, optimum start and stop of HVAC based on the outside weather and cooling rate of the building, and optimization of night and weekend load of UPS.
The product automatically generates daily reports specifying the energy consumption for the day, and its comparison with pre-defined benchmarks so that building managers can easily keep a tab on the energy spend across buildings and within each building. Besides helping commercial/industrial consumers with optimizing their energy consumption, Zenatix is also developing state of the art Smart Grid Solutions for optimal demand side and supply side management.

Founded in 2013, it has a big client list that includes NIIT, Xerox, Google, Tata Teleservices, Mother Dairy, Glaxo SmithKline, and Starbucks. The innovative product at Zenatix helps in many ways to its customers to deal with their energy conservation along with recommending energy-saving measures.
- As we know, energy inefficiencies are common in a large building environment and one of the biggest reasons is the lack of information about such inefficiencies. Zenatix’ solution helps its customers find out and eliminate those inefficiencies to save energy.
- Nowadays, many power distribution companies use time-of-day pricing for commercial users, i.e., paying more in peak hours. Zenatix’ solution helps its customers if they don’t know if certain non-critical loads can be moved to the off-peak hours.
- In the industrial establishments where some equipment/ machinery consume more power than its rated power, their real-time monitoring solution will help them identify such equipment and also help build a business case (with a clear ROI period) for replacement of such equipment.
- Zenatix’ solution will help build a business case supported by precise data and an indication of ROI period if its customers have struggled with making a business case for the replacement of their old equipment with the state-of-the-art equipment available in the market.
Internet of Things (IoT) is making its presence felt across the globe, whether it is wearable technology in the wellness and health sector or home solutions or transpiration. A study by International Data Corporation (IDC), a research firm, estimates that by 2020 there will be over 28 billion objects with data exchange capabilities. Being a startup, Zenatix has a first-mover advantage in various segments within IoT and thus would be able to show results to customers, and can acquire a large cross-section of customers.
Zenatix was selected as one of the startups to exhibit at the Smart Innovation Hub, organized as part of India Smart Grid Week (ISGW), held in Bangalore from March 3-5, 2015. Dr. Amarjeet Singh presented on how Zenatix energy data analytics can help contribute to the Smart Utilities domain for the Smart Cities while participating in the 2nd Smart Cities Summit where Zenatix was selected as one of the companies to present at the startup innovation showcase.
