Tinder, a location-based dating app, has launched Tinder Social allowing a group of friends on the application to hang out with another group. The new feature was launched in India, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand on July 21.
Tinder, owned by InterActiveCorp (IAC), was launched in 2012 with an intention to help singles find dates, however, the new feature would now give others a chance to expand their social circles. Tinder Social has been launched as a feature in Tinder app and users can change the settings to use it.
Tinder Social was launched in Australia in April on a test-basis. The company said the feature was used in Australia to organise pub crawls and make plans to attend concerts, according to NDTV Gadgets.
“Tinder Social is designed to make it as easy as possible to plan your night, get out into the real world and meet new people. The new feature takes the Tinder experience to a new level, offering our users more ways to expand their social circles and interact with potential matches,” Tinder’s CEO and co-founder Sean Rad said.
CCS Insight chief of research Ben Wood feels Tinder Social could be used as “orgy” app, BBC reported.
“Tinder is seen by many as being a hook-up site. So, it needs to be careful. By expanding in this direction, rather than becoming a more interesting social meeting service, it could be perceived as an orgy app,” Wood said.
However, Rad said Tinder Social was not developed with those intentions. “It definitely allows you to make connections beyond just romantic ones. We look at Tinder as not just being a dating app, but capturing your entire social life. And your social life has so many different aspects to it,” he said.
How does the feature work?
Tinder users first need to make individual groups of one to three people on Tinder Social. If two groups swipe right on each other’s groups, then those two groups are merged and people there can plan an outing. These groups would remain active for 48 hours.
However, Tinder users can opt out of Tinder Social if they do not want their Facebook friends, using Tinder Social, to add them in the groups, Venture Beat reported.
“Any user who would prefer not to be added to groups can opt out of Tinder Social through his/her settings to no longer appear on their friends’ lists. We are only testing it at this point, but it’s important to note Tinder’s not a secret considering 70% of users download Tinder because their friends recommend it,” the company said.
Tinder Social is available for free now, but the company might add premium features to make profit, Rad told BBC.
