In an important development, Rakuten Inc., a leading name in the e-commerce and the fintech space has entered into a strategic partnership with China’s largest retailer, JD.com. The news was made public by the company in its blog on Thursday.
As per the blog, Rakuten will use the drones and unmanned vehicles provided by JD.com in Rakuten’s unmanned delivery solutions in Japan.
The blog further adds that the new agreement will allow Rakuten to combine excellence in drone delivery service in Japan and combine it with JD.com’s expertise in drones and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), which have a proven track record in China. The collaboration is likely to help Rakuten to use JD.com’s unmanned delivery services to suit a wide range of applications and situations.
Speaking about the partnership, Koji Ando, Group Managing Executive Officer of Rakuten said, “We are delighted to begin this collaboration with JD.com, which boasts the most cutting-edge proprietary delivery network in China as well as a track record and know-how in delivery with drones and UGVs.”

Speaking about the partnership, Jun Xiao, president of JD-X, JD’s logistics innovation lab said, “We have been using drones and autonomous delivery robots for real deliveries in China for over two years. As we push the boundaries of what our unmanned delivery technology can do, and explore its use in a wide range of applications from e-commerce to humanitarian support, we believe that it will bring significant benefits to people all around the globe. ”
